Mahoyana Nkwanyana is a South African Maskandi singer, songwriter, and musician from Maphumulo in KwaZulu-Natal. He has built a reputation within the South African music space through his combination of traditional Zulu folk styles with modern influences, earning recognition as a custodian of cultural expression. His journey began in 1989 when he co-founded the group Abafana Abalungile, later working with Abafana Base Mawusi alongside Hlongwane Macimba, grounding his early work in traditional forms.
His career gained strong momentum with the 2008 release of his album "Thwasa" under Sony BMG. The project, which included its well-known title track, strengthened his presence in the industry and highlighted his musical direction. Beyond solo work, Nkwanyana has collaborated on projects such as Mbongeni Ngema’s "Sarafina 2" and performed with the Six Mabona marimba band. A notable moment came in 2010 when he opened for Johnny Clegg in Emmarentia.
More recently, he continued his output with the 2024 album "Zulu Pride: Melodic Power Maskandi," released through Mama Dance!. He divides his time between Maphumulo and Soweto, maintaining close ties to his roots. Married to Fisani Busangani with ten children, he remains committed to both family life and his ongoing contribution to Maskandi music.
